Dr. Michael A. Belfort is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine and Obstetrician and Gynecologist-in-Chief at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas.

He earned his medical degree from the University of the Witwatersrand Medical School and completed postgraduate training in anesthesia and obstetrics and gynecology in South Africa. After emigrating to the USA he repeated Ob/Gyn residency and completed a Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Belfort received a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Cape Town for his research in neonatal brain blood flow and a PhD from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden for his work on cerebral blood flow and autoregulation in pregnancy.

Appointed Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Baylor in 2011, Dr. Belfort has been a leader in fetal surgery, obstetric intensive care and placenta percreta surgery, and in global maternal health, particularly in Malawi, where Baylor faculty have helped achieve dramatic reductions in maternal and neonatal mortality and expanded specialist physician training.

Dr. Belfort has authored more than 520 peer-reviewed publications.
